Te Mōkihi Mātauraka – Education Services

Te Mōkihi Mātauraka delivers our education services, guided by kaupapa Māori principles and grounded in the mātauraka of Moeraki. Our services focus on restoring cultural connection, promoting educational achievement, and providing safe, inclusive learning spaces that reflect the values of our community.

We work alongside rakatahi, tamariki, and their whānau to ensure that education is relevant, empowering, and rooted in identity.

Our Services Include:

Te Pōhā – Mahika Kai Leadership Program

Te Pōhā nurtures and shapes our leaders of tomorrow by leading rakatahi through wānaka-based learning approaches. This is education grounded in Māori knowledge systems, seasonal kai cycles, and engagement with environment.

Delivered in partnership with Te Aho o te Kura Pounamu, our tauira develop literacy, numeracy, and life skills through:

  • Mahika Kai – Gathering, preparing, and preserving food

  • Mahi ā Tīpuna – Ancestral knowledge and stewardship

  • Mahi Toi – Creative expressions: rāraka, whakairo, waiata, pūrākau

  • Wairuataka – Spiritual connection to people and places

  • Tinana – Health, wellbeing, and fitness

  • Hinekaro – Emotional wellbeing and sustainability

  • Whanaukataka – Collective identity and responsibility

Education Navigation:
Support for whānau and tauira to navigate mainstream and alternative education systems, ensuring access to resources, advocacy, and tailored support throughout their learning journey.

Individualised Learning Plans:
Tailored education pathways developed collaboratively with tauira and whānau.

Mahi Toi & Wānaka-Based Learning:
Creative expression through pūrakau, waiata, whakairo, rāraka, and other hands-on learning aligned with cultural identity.

Life Skills & Wellbeing:
Focus on tinana (physical wellbeing), hinekaro (emotional balance), wairuataka (spiritual connection), and whanaukataka (collective responsibility).
